Symptoms

COPD is a group of lung diseases that cause airflow blockage and difficulty in breathing. The two main types of COPD are Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.

  • Chronic Bronchitis: In this it involves inflammation and irritation of the bronchial tubes (airways) which results in thick mucus production. This causes persistent cough with sputum for at least 3 months in 2 consecutive years. Airways becomes narrowed and clogged, making breathing difficult.
  • Emphysema: It involves damage to the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs) where the oxygen exchange happens. The alveoli walls are destroyed, causing less oxygen to get into the blood. This further results in shortness of breath and reduced lung function.
