How is the CT Chest Scan Performed?

Before the Scan:

The patient is asked to change their clothes into a hospital gown and the removal of the metal objects and the jewelry of the patient.
For the Contrast scans, the patient may need to fast for about 4-6 hours before the scan.
Inform your doctor beforehand if you have any issues like:
1. Kidney problems
2. Any allergy with contrast dye or iodine.
3. If you have diabetes or thyroid conditions.
4. If you are pregnant.

During the Scan:

The patient has to lie flat on a motorized CT table which further slides into a doughnut – shaped scanner.
Then they will be asked to lie still and hold their breath for a few seconds while the image is being captured.
If contrast is used then a needle would be inserted into the patient’s vein usually in the arm or hand. Then there will be a feeling of warm sensation or metallic taste when the injection is injected.

Generally CT Scans are safe but there are some risks and some important considerations which you should keep in your mind:

Radiation Exposure : CT Scan uses much more radiations than X – Rays. HRTC uses thin slices for high resolution, which slightly increases your exposure of the rays.
Contrast Related Risks ( for CECT Scans) : It has mild side effects like nausea, warmth, and metallic taste. Some allergic reactions such as rashes, itching or swelling. Damage in kidney for the people who already have poor kidney.

What Happens After the Scan?

After the test one can return back to it’s normal activities immediately.
If contrast was used drink plenty of fluids to help flush it out from the system.
The final reports of the test are usually available within 24-48 hours.
